However, with the abundance of cooking, sharing, and storing food during this busy time, the risks of foodborne illnesses can increase significantly. Ensuring food safety is crucial to keep the celebrations joyful and free from health issues.

Foodborne illnesses often stem from improper handling, cooking, or storage of food. During Chinese New Year, the risks can multiply because:

1. Increased Food Preparation: The large quantities of food prepared for family gatherings can lead to lapses in proper hygiene and safety practices.

2. Extended Storage: With so many dishes, some food might be left out for hours or stored improperly, increasing the risk of contamination.

3. High Demand in F&B Outlets: Restaurants and food stalls often operate at full capacity, and shortcuts in hygiene and food handling may inadvertently occur under pressure.

1. Maintain Strict Hygiene Standards

3. Cook Thoroughly

– Ensure meats, poultry, and seafood are cooked to their safe internal temperatures. For example, poultry should reach 75°C.

– Avoid serving undercooked or raw dishes, especially to vulnerable family members such as children or the elderly.

4. Store Food Safely

– Store leftovers promptly in airtight containers and refrigerate them within two hours of cooking.

– Label containers with the date to avoid keeping leftovers for too long.

5. Reheat Properly

– When reheating leftovers, ensure they reach a safe temperature of at least 75°C. Stir dishes to ensure even heating.

6. Be Mindful of Cross-Contamination

– Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw and cooked food.

– Store raw meat and seafood below ready-to-eat items in the fridge to prevent juices from dripping onto other foods.
