It is important that individuals are being safe in the workplace and are aware of the potential risks that can occur, as well as ways to prevent it as much as possible. The burden of occupational injuries and diseases is significant, both for employers and the wider economy, resulting in losses from early retirements, staff absence and rising insurance premiums. To combat the problem, ISO has developed a new standard, ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety management systems.
What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 is a recognized worldwide standard for advising on Occupational Health and Safety Management System and ensuring employees’ health and safety in the workplace. ISO 45001 replaces the previous OHSAS 18001 standard effectively on 12 March 2018.
Why ISO 45001?
Employees’ health and safety are critical in any workplace especially in high risk industry such as construction where incidents and accidents can lead to serious injury and death in many cases.
When an OHSMS within a company is effective, employees’ health and safety can be maximized.
Prevention is better than cure, as there are often no second chances when it comes to accidents.
Which are the area of interest and concern?
To comply with ISO 45001, the basics had to be fulfilled:
- Leadership
General reinforcement of the importance of OHSMS, delivery of communication, leadership by example. - Legal compliance
Legislation on personal safety, safety workwear, personal protective equipment and premise/site management must be analysed. - Hazard and risk identification
Industry where risks provide real danger of grave injuries, special attention had to be paid to risk identification and mitigation, especially using the knowledge, experience and opinions of all employees. - Communication, participation, consultation
With training and awareness, it provide the key to how the employees perceived the culture of the company, as well as making a hugely positive impact in mitigating risk.
When to migrate to ISO 45001 if you already hold OHSAS 18001?
A 3 years grace period will be granted for the transition from 12 March 2018.
